Inside Helch Market, where street food meets city nightlife.

Since the 22nd of May 2026, Winchester has had the pleasure to feature the Helch Market food hall as one of its unique places to eat in town. I was one of the lucky few who got to experience the place a day before its official opening, so I had a great opportunity to immediately get a first impression. Since then, whenever I’m asked what this place is supposed to be, I have described it as ‘a food court, but it’s cool’.

Helch Market is located near High Street, just by the Brooks Shopping Centre. It’s easily found, with a sleek industrial exterior and doorway which walking through comes with so much prestige it feels like getting in on an exclusive experience. Then on the inside you’ll find a diner-like seating area, perfect for a solo sit-in meal or a group hang-out. The space is clean and stylised, raising expectations for the food quality. There is also a garden section that lets you eat outside if the weather is to your liking.

The diner hall is surrounded by five separate kitchens that all offer different flavours: Mexican inspired street food at Loco Lime, hybrid Asian street food at Woosabi, soulful fried chicken from Will’s Meals, juicy burgers at 3 Bros, pure steak and roasts from Field and Furnace, and finally the matcha and coffees found at Matcha Labs. Amongst the kitchens, there’s also the Helch Tap bar where you can choose from eighteen different taps to help wash down your meal.

Each kitchen has a clear sign with their independent menus, but there are paper menus scattered across the tables to read through as well. When I placed my order (3 Bros’ classic burger with chips), I was given a small digital token with a number and told to wait until I felt the token buzz. Surely enough, after about fifteen minutes (on account of the packed opening evening) of sitting and chatting, I felt the token gently vibrating in my hand and I could confidently walk back to find my meal already waiting for me. A smart and unobtrusive solution that avoids unnecessary noise and confusion.

The full meals at Helch Market aren’t the cheapest in town, running you at least £15 – £20 for one person if you include a side. However, you are most definitely receiving the kind of quality and portions you’d expect from such a price tag. My 3 Bros burger was flavourful and packed, and the chips were perfectly crunchy and seasoned. Wanting to try something else as well, I went for one of Loco Lime’s sides as a small snack: their hand made nacho chips and cheese sauce dip. Warm, crunchy, and a perfect snack-sized serving.

I was also very pleased with my experience as a celiac; while there aren’t many full meals that can be made gluten-free (3 Bros offering bun alternatives at best), everything was still very clearly labelled, and the kitchen staff were very knowledgeable. When I asked about 3 Bros’ halloumi fries, they quickly informed me that they were not allergy safe due to cross-contamination on the fryer. The proximity between the kitchens might not make Helch Market completely safe for those with serious food intolerances, however you will get honest and educated answers from the staff.

All in all, the Helch Market food hall is absolutely a place to check out at least once. It’s great to visit with friends for a quick but delicious-on-another-level meal, and a unique corner to explore more. The unassuming diner also contains secret up and downstairs floors, with a photo-booth, pool table, and other fun surprises. You’ll have to go discover them for yourself! And you’ll likely find me there as well, as I have and will make many returning trips.
