Firstly I must state: I am not a nerd, I am a geek. Geeks are sociable. But as a geek I find the whole idea of superheroes fascinating. One in particular has always been my favourite. He is the Dark Knight, the Caped Crusader, Batman himself.  The whole ideology of Batman enthrals me because he’s just an ordinary bloke… with billions of dollars.

So, with this in mind, I watched the newest of the Batman films: Batman: Under the Red Hood. This is an animated film which follows the “Death in the family” story line for any of you comic book geeks out there like me. To the rest, it tells the story of a mysterious new Anti- Hero who has arrived in Gotham called “Red Hood”.  Unlike Batman, though, he is a lot more aggressive and is willing to kill. This leads Batman to try and discover who this new “Hero” is.

I didn’t expect to like this film as much as I did (although, as a geek I knew I wouldn’t hate it because, after all, it’s Batman). I thought it would be childish and lacking a sensible story line, but I was surprised to find the story very engaging, and riveting from beginning to end. And for an animated feature, the content was very mature. With adult language and graphic depictions of cartoon violence (like an animated Kick-ass), this film isn’t scared to delve into the mature and tell a great story. So as a Batman geek, I felt like this film was a secret gem that I must share with the rest of my kind.

I highly recommend this film to anyone who loves Batman and I would even recommend it to those who don’t. I understand it’s in a little bit of a niche category as some may feel they are too old for cartoons and the superhero genre is generally reserved for the geeks like me. But any other geeks out there should definitely watch this film. It’s a must.
