Muse – The Resistance (2009)
Rating: 6/10
Best Tracks: Uprising; The Resistance; Guiding Light.

I can’t help but feel that Muse have simply tried to be too clever on this album. Yes, progression has to be applauded (I mean, imagine if Brian Wilson had listened to his bandmates and stuck to the Beach Boys’ ‘formula’ instead of making Pet Sounds), but The Resistance ends up a mediocre offering as a result of Muse’s ambition. The bland three-part ‘Symphony’ is a shining example of how their experimentation hasn’t paid off, and succeeds only in casting a shadow over a brilliant, punchy start to the album. Perhaps The Resistance will grow on me over time, like so many other albums have, but for now, this disappoints.
